U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein has come out against Proposition 8. It is the first time Feinstein has spoken out against the measure, known as Proposition 8.
“As a state, I believe we should uphold the ability of our friends, neighbors and co-workers who are gay and lesbian to enter into the contract of marriage,” Feinstein said in a statement released by her office. “[It is a matter of] equality and fairness.”
In 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began allowing marriage licenses to be issued to same-sex couples. At the time Feinstein said it was “too much, too fast, too soon.”
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger already has voiced his opposition to the proposed amendment.
A majority of likely voters, 54%, oppose ending gay marriage, compared with 40% who support it, the Public Policy poll found. The result is similar to the findings of a Field Poll in July, which found that 51% of likely California voters opposed ending gay marriage, while 42% said they supported it.
But when it comes to general attitudes about gay marriage, voters in the Public Policy Institute poll are evenly split, at 47% for and against - as they have been for the past three years.
